The growing status of La Manga Club’s South Course in European golf has been further highlighted after being selected as the biggest improver in a new list of Spain’s top 100 courses.

Less than 12 months after Gary Silcock took over as director of golf at La Manga Club, the par-73 layout, one of three 18-hole championship courses at the five-star resort, leapt 19 places in the latest rankings released by popular website www.top100courses.co.uk.

Under the Scot’s guidance, the South Course – a five-time host of the Spanish Open – has undergone a major investment in its facilities and enjoyed a hugely successful year, including staging the 2013 Spanish International Amateur Championship.

The course will host the 2014 Spanish Seniors International Amateur Championship at the start of next month while it will help bring La Manga Club’s winter golfing season to a climax by staging the PGAs of Europe’s 1st La Manga Club International Pro-Am from March 7-11.

Silcock said: “The South Course at La Manga Club is one of the famous and celebrated golfing venues in Europe.

“Some of the game’s biggest stars have enjoyed treading its fairways over the years and, with continued investment,  we are well on the way to restoring its position at the forefront of golf in Spain

The South Course’s rise in the latest ‘Top 100’ rankings is not the only good news for La Manga Club with its other two 18-hole layouts, the West Course and North Course, also featuring prominently in the 2014 list.

The West, the newest of the award-winning venue’s courses, rose one position in the standings to 36th place – one ahead of the South – while the North was rated 63rd best in Spain.

The new recognition comes at an exciting time for La Manga Club that will further enhance its reputation as Europe’s premier sports and leisure destination and Spain’s flagship resort.

In addition to a busy spring on the course, the venue will open a new Leadbetter Golf Academy later this month – the only such facility in mainland Spain – while trick-shot star Dean Davis has joined the likes of Liverpool FC legend Kenny Dalglish and Scotland manager Gordon Strachan as a resort ambassador.

As well as three 18-hole championship courses, La Manga Club boasts unrivalled facilities as a sports and leisure destination including a 28-court tennis centre and a 2,000sqm spa and fitness centre. It also offers the choice of a five-star hotel, four-star serviced apartments and townhouses and more than 20 bars and restaurants. (source)
