Pearl Country Club was purchased by Mr. Soichiro Honda, founder of Honda Motors Co. Ltd in December of 1975. Mr. Honda’s goals were to serve the community first, foster international goodwill and provide Hawaii golfers with the opportunities to experience top-notch completion. In 1979 the Hawaii Pearl Open was established by Mr. Honda.
The Hawaii Pearl Open was one of Hawaii’s largest local tournaments. Each year, approximately half of Hawaii Pearl Open field came from Japan’s professional golf tour, along with the country’s top amateurs. Until his passing in 1991 at the age of 84, he imprinted both the Pearl Country Club and Hawaii Pearl Open with his personal beliefs and energy. The last Hawaii Pearl Open tournament was in February 2013.
