Legend has it, back in 2006 a group of lads were having a hit-about at the local golf course near the Tui Brewery. With the brewery tower in sight, they were struck by a moment of genius, which saw them deviate from the fairway and over the fence, where they continued playing cross-country through farmland, bush, the odd backyard, a bowling green and over the final hazard — the mighty Mangatainoka River.
Well, that’s what we overheard anyway, from some guy at the bar who apparently knew the greenskeeper’s girlfriend. All we know for certain is when the lads get together with a round Tui’s, the legends start brewing…
