Honma make very special golf clubs. PXG might be the new kids on the block producing expensive golf clubs, but Honma have been making gorgeous sticks since 1963 so they’ve got a bit of a head start on the Arizonian upstarts. We’ve teamed up with Japan’s most exclusive brand to give away a custom fitted set of Tour World irons from their European Tour club fitter. But first of all you need to find out which set you’re going to want….
The TW727 is their most in depth Tour World range of irons ever. Whilst there is a true blade, there is also a set that could easily be played by an 18 handicapper, and possibly higher.
All the irons feature forged heads, but Honma have also introduced a new technology called W Forged to the V and Vn models. The metal is hot forged at the first stage then cold forged at the second stage. This produces a better forging that is denser by the clubface. At the microscopic level the grains of steel are packed tighter together. This gives a solid feel, but also helps the ball fly further, especially on miss hits high on the face.
So what about the models themselves. The TW727M might just be the best looking golf club you have ever seen. Forged in Japan, the blade is very classic, whilst still having a modern look. With more weight directly behind the sweet spot, these are designed for the very best players. We wish we were good enough for them, but we’re not so we’ll just drool all over them from afar.
The TW727VN is a new addition to the Tour World range. Designed for the better golfer who wants to use a blade but also wants just a little bit more forgiveness. Featuring a compact head and the same lofts as the blades, these are the most popular model with Honma’s tour staff. Again, absolutely stunning – it mixes perfectly with the M if you’re looking for a combo set.
The TW727V at first glance looks very similar to the VN, however it is slightly larger, with a wider sole and deeper cavity making it more forgiving, with stronger lofts to help you hit the ball further. If we were using a set of Honma irons we’d go for these.
The TW727P is a different beast altogether. With its two piece head design what it gives up in feel it adds in forgiveness and distance. The managing steel face is hot, whilst the long irons feature a deep undercut for forgiveness down to the short irons, which gradually get shallower cavities for more feel.
