It has been said that it takes leather balls to play rugby, and with this Chapeau Noir does not disagree. Similarly, it can now be said that it takes minty trousers to play golf.

Chapeau Noir is the proud recipient of a range of sample gear from Sligo, the Canadian golf apparel company that takes a back seat to no man when it comes to putting your most aggressive foot forward when it comes to making a definitive statement on the links.

Mint Plaid Trousers

Sligo cuts the distinctly European line of any North American-based company on the golf clothing market today, and if you want to get noticed — and Chapeau Noir knows that you do — Sligo’s new Mint Plaid trousers ($95 / around €70) will help you stand out from the defacto three stripe swoosh adorned crowd, and then some.

And if you feel you need game to wear these straight legged pants with a comfortable two-way stretch component, forget it, because what ever game your playing partners brought from the parking lot to the first tee will be reduced to rubble when they lay their eyes on these beauties.

Chapeau Noir’s favorite detail in the Mint Plaids can be found running down the outside of each leg, and across the top of each of the ample rear pockets — a black piping that adds that extra visual appeal, just in case you needed it.

Brighton Shirt

One of the things that consistently impresses Chapeau Noir is the range of choices Sligo provides to its customers — ensuring that you will always find something you like, from subtle to stunning.

The Brighton, from Sligo.

The Brighton shirt, in black with a funky white argyle pattern is a bold yet conservative choice. Sligo’s shorter sleeves and tailored look give the Brighton a bespoke quality of sorts that can be found throughout all of Sligo’s offerings, at a more than reasonable price point of $70 that won’t make you wait for it to hit the sales rack.

Digitile Hoffland

As you may have noticed, it’s almost October, and while Chapeau Noir can’t bear to go into details for fear of tempting the weather gods into an early onset of the white stuff, let it be known that he plays his best golf when there’s a crisp feel to the air.

This year, Chapeau Noir will be be doing it wearing the Digitile Hoffland ($90 / around €67), a long sleeved hybrid-like option that will bridge the gap between short sleeves and a heavier sweater. The ‘Digitile’ pattern (now a Sligo signature of sorts) can be found running across the shoulders and down the outside length of the sleeves of this technical sweater made from a four-way stretch material — which by the way is anti-microbial — so you won’t end up stinkin’ the joint out at the 19th hole, even if you did so on the course.

SweaterFest

Seriously, the fine folks at Sligo must have caught wind of Chapeau Noir’s penchant for playing golf in frosty weather. Having been known to tee it up on municipal tracks under cover of late afternoon darkness just because he senses that a career round may be in the offing, Chapeau Noir will have nary an excuse, other than frost bitten hands, when that elusive sub seventy round is scuttled by an enthusiastic squirrel who mistakes his well struck Titleist for a albino nut. Blast!

Chapeau Noir’s Fall 2011 Sligo sweater line up. From left to right, the Matthews in Smoke ($75 / around €56), the Striped Sweater in City Blue ($80 / around €60), and the full zip Icon in Black ($85 / around €64).

But enough about Chapeau Noir’s travails. On to sweaterfest from Sligo.

First up, the silky smooth Matthews ($75), a fleece of a sort, but not in the traditional ‘patagonia’ sense. A brush poly, the Matthews wraps but does not restrict, and is just about the coolest looking quarter zip pullover Chapeau Noir has ever laid eyes on. Even non-sporty types will have an eye on the Matthews.

Next is the Striped Sweater ($80), the sort of fall staple that every man who isn’t just a fair weather golfer will require. Those from across the pond might call them ‘jumpers’, but if you’re doing a whole lot of jumping when you’re playing golf, well, you’re doing it wrong. The wide horizontal stripes in this item from Sligo will give you a bit of an avant guard Scandinavian look, so don’t blame me if some statuesque blonde of the female persuasion chats you up over some Glögg while you’re wearing it.

Last, but hardly least, check out the Icon from Sligo, in black. Of all the Fall 2011 Sligo items at his disposal, this may very well be the one that will get the most use. It’s versatile, classic, and just bold with the Sligo green highlights on the cuffs and hem to avoid anonymity. You’ll be doing it up just right on course, in the office, or out and about with the family picking pumpkins and taking hay rides and whatnot, sporting Sligo’s Icon ($85).
