Jordan Spieth showed there was a time and a place for a driving iron at Royal Birkdale. Although he hit his Titleist 718 T-MB three iron a fraction fat in his final round from the practice ground, it proved how much more forgiving they are compared to a normal three iron. For the golfer who doesn’t like a hybrid, they can be deadly. And PXG may have released the ultimate driving iron with their new 0311X model.

In play at the Open in the bags of last man into the Open James Hahn, Charles Howell III and Charl Schwartzel among others, the 0311X is a forgiving driving iron for the better player. While it’s got a wide sole like the 0311XF, it’s not designed for to launch the ball high. Instead the wide sole lowers the centre of gravity to produce less spin for a penetrating ball flight. The offset has been massively reduced as well, as offset is one of the things that launches the ball higher, as well as making them more fade based than the XF.

Like all of PXG’s irons, it features a forged 8620 carbon steel body and a ultra thin HT1770 high strength steel face. The thin face is supported by TPE, that softens the feel and supports the thin face. This technology works. We’ve tried the PXG irons many times now. They’re more forgiving than other clubs, feel better, and fly longer. Theres no reason to believe this wouldn’t be the same for the 0311X.

We can picture players building combo sets with these and the 0311T irons, forgiveness where you need it, but low launch and spin throughout the set. In recent times I’ve been looking for a set of clubs that offer a lot of forgiveness with low offset. These could be the perfect long irons I’m looking for. And they come in PXG’s sexy extreme dark finish too.
