Prison View Golf Course, a 6,000-yard (5,500 m2), 9 hole course located on the grounds of Louisiana State Penitentiary (LSP is also known as Angola, and nicknamed the “Alcatraz of the South” and “The Farm”). Prison View is the only golf course on the property of an American prison.

All individuals wishing to play are required to provide personal information 48 hours before their arrival, so the prison authorities can conduct background checks; there is also the possibility of a body check or an inspection of their car.

Convicted felons and individuals on LSP visitation lists are not permitted to play on the golf course. Current prisoners at LSP are not permitted to play on the golf course. The golf course, constructed on the site of a former bull pasture, opened in June 2004. Prisoners performed most of the work needed to construct the course. Prisoners that the LSP administration considers to be the most trustworthy are permitted to work at the golf course.
Warden Burl Cain stated that he wants employees to stay at Angola during weekends, because Angola employees would support the prison in case of an emergency; he built the course so employees would be enticed to stay at Angola over weekends.

Another interesting thing is that, while California’s Pebble Beach course has been called “the No. 1 course in America”, Prisonview has been called the “bloodiest prison” in the United States.” Understandably, games have been suspended on several occasions due to riots and other emergencies, but you really should expect that when you show up at a place called Prisonview.
