Nick Faldo was born in Welwyn Garden City, England in the 18 of July 1957. He borrowed some clubs from his neighbours after watching Jack Nicklaus play the 1971 Masters on television. While working as a carpet fitter, Faldo won the English Amateur and the British Youths Championship in 1975. He turned professional in 1976 and quickly achieved success and in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Faldo was considered the best golfer in the world. Nick Faldo is also the most successful Ryder Cup player ever, having won the most points of any player on either team and having represented the European Team a record 11 times and played a key role in making Europe competitive in the event; with six Major championships, more than 40 tournament victories and a total of 98 weeks as the world’s number one golfer, Nick is broadly regarded as the most successful golfer that Britain has ever produced.
After cutting back on his playing schedule, Faldo became a broadcaster for ABC Sports’ PGA Tour coverage, where he collaborated from 2004 to 2006, in October that year he signed a contract with CBS and became the network’s lead golf analyst. In 2007 he became the Golf Channel’s lead golf analyst for their coverage on the PGA Tour. His career as a golf designer started in 1991 with the launch of Faldo Design, which has designed or remodeled dozens of courses spread across several continents. Designs include course in various countries:
Australia: 13th Beach – The Creek Course.
Europe: Chart Hills Golf Club (England), Sporting Club Berlin (Germany), Oceânico Faldo Course (Algarve, Portugal), Chart Hills (England), Cornelia Golf Resort (Turkey), Ballyliffin – Old Links (Ireland), Eléa Golf Club (Cyprus), Ledreborg Palace (Denmark), Lough Erne Resort (N. Ireland).
North America: Wildfire Faldo Championship (Arizona, USA), Shadow Ridge (California, USA), Cottonwood Hills (Kansas, USA) Bella Collina (Florida, USA), Roco Ki – Faldo Legacy Course (Macao, Dominican Republic), The Rock (Muskoka, Canada).
Asia: Angkor Golf Resort (Cambodia), Eagle Ridge – Faldo Course (Philippines), Emirates Club – Faldo Course (Dubai, UAE), Honghua International (China), Lakeview (China), Mission Hills – Faldo Stadium Course (China), Ocean Dunes (Vietnam).
Of his wide list of current projects here some of the courses where you may in a near future experience the remarkable strength of Nick Faldo’s design, some of the newer projects are: Black Sand (Olfus, Iceland), Estrela Santiago (Santiago,Cape Verde), La Repose (nr. Alexandria, South Africa), Las Ventanas de San Miguel (San Miguel de Allende, Mexico) and in Portugal the Santa Maria (Azores), Ponta do Pargo (Madeira) and Monte Rocha (Alentejo).
As way of opening his first course design in the UK (Charthills) in Kent, Faldo teed up on the dog-leg right par four. He drove in to the middle-right of the fairway, he then teed another ball and drove off, the two balls finished within 6 inches of each other and to this day can be seen set in to the fairway in a protective case. This was a mark of the man’s ability at his peak.
